Why does my pet need a prescription?

Many drugs are only effective to treat specific issues, and could be harmful to your pet if used without a veterinary examination and diagnosis. Having these drugs available as prescription-only medications ensures that they are used appropriately. Your prescriptions are filled immediately during your appointment and sent home with you. No need to make a separate trip anywhere else, or hassle with online validations.

Why do I have to bring my pet in for an examination before a prescription can be issued?

It is both unlawful, and unethical, for a veterinarian to write a prescription or dispense a prescription drug without an active veterinarian-client-patient relationship (VCPR). In order maintain this legal VCPR, your veterinarian must see your pet regularly. How often depends on your pet’s health or condition, as well as the drug prescribed. We may also need to re-examine your pet, check bloodwork, or monitor your pet’s response to treatment and determine if the medication or treatment plan should be changed.

What is prescription pet food?

Prescription dog or cat food is specially formulated by veterinary nutritionists for specific health issues your pet may have. Certain conditions, both temporary and chronic, benefit from prescription foods. This could be a sensitive digestion formula following a gastric surgery or illness, targeted protein levels for managing kidney health, hunger satiety blend for controlling weight loss, and more. We carry Royal Canin Precision Veterinary Diets in-house for both dogs and cats.

Yes! As long as we have an exam on file, and the prescription is available for refill, medications ordered through our online pharmacy can be shipped directly to your home!

No, we do not endorse the use of online or outside pharmacies due to the high risk and potential for errors. Learn more here. If you would like your pet’s medication filled by a provider other than our hospital, we can provide you with a written prescription for $10.
