Federal law prohibits veterinary offices from dispensing prescription medication without first establishing a veterinary client-patient relationship (VCPR). This would require a separate Pharmacy Dispensing License that veterinary hospitals generally do not carry.

No returns on prescription products. The North Carolina Veterinary Medical Board and Board of Pharmacy regulations prohibit the return and resale of pharmaceutical products once they have left the control of our hospital. We cannot offer refund or credit for unused or unwanted medications once they have been dispensed to you. (Manufacturer guarantees excepted).

We do not ACCEPT PRESCRIPTION requests from OUTSIDE OR internet pharmacies.

Due to the risk of wrong medications, wrong dosages, and the significant time it takes away from patient care, we do not endorse prescriptions from outside or internet pharmacies. Our hospital is your best pharmacist! We know your pet’s health status, their correct drugs and dosages, as well as all other medications your pet may be taking, to avoid any potential drug interactions. We only recommend filling your pet’s prescriptions for pickup at our hospital, or for delivery through our online store.

Written prescriptions may be provided in lieu of your prescribed medication upon request, to be filled at a pharmacy of your choosing. If you elect to have these filled through an online pharmacy, we advise you to make a copy of your prescription and send them the original.

Why do you charge a written prescription fee?

Issuing a prescription isn’t quite as simple as just pulling out the pad and pen. The prescription must also be verified and recorded in the patient’s medical record, and often extra reporting is required for controlled substances. Even if it takes just 5 minutes of the doctor’s time to complete the written script, a dozen written script requests equates to an hour of the doctor’s time taken away from patient care. The actual number of written script requests received each day is typically far higher than this! Veterinary teams average 3 hours per day on outside prescription requests. When we fill prescriptions in house, the cost of the time to do this is included in the price, along with the cost of labels, bottles, and the medication itself. If we do not fill them in house, our team must still be compensated for the time spent processing each request.

While we will never have the purchasing power of the giant online pharmacies, our goal is always to get pets the medications they need to keep them healthy and comfortable. Additionally, both you and your pet will benefit when we have accurate records of what they’re consuming! Because of these values, we aim to keep our preventive and chronic-use medications as reasonably and competitively priced as we can, allowing you to enjoy the convenience, service, and familiarity of a local provider while still respecting your wallet.
